Week 1: I’m going to be a triathlete!

by Heidi on May 28, 2012

So I registered for my  first triathlon. Another item off my 30 before 30 list (which I need to update and blog about the ones I’ve done…). I hijacked my sister in law’s old mountain bike that seems to be a perfect sized bike for me, and registered for this bad boy – July 21st. Eight weeks. With a running streak in the middle. It’s going to be busy. Very, very, very busy but let me tell you – I am super excited (not sure if I’m more excited for the race or the wine festival at the end!).

So it’s time to start getting ready for this – I’m confident about the run part, and maybe the swim. But the bike? Biking scares me (mostly because I’m scared of riding with cars. And falling.)

Triathlon training week 1

Monday: run 3 miles
Tuesday:
strength+run 20/yoga
Wednesday:
20 min run/swim 30 minutes
Thursday:
45 min bike/ 20 min run
Friday:
run 20/strength
Saturday:
Zooma 10k
Sunday:
swim 30/bike 30

I’m going to modify the Hal Higdon 8 week Triathlon beginner training plan. I don’t have any huge running races except for 2 10k’s and a couple 5k’s between now and then and on days when there’s a longer bike or longer swim, I’ll probably just add a 1-2 mile warm up so as to get my running in for the Runners World Streak (1 down 37 to go!).

Now I’m reading up on Triathlon posts from newbies, not so newbies trying to find out what gear do I need (bike, helmet, check. goggles, swim gear check, running shoes check – but what do I wear day of? How do I fuel myself? How do I fit in my workouts? You know, researching the how tos, is this the best training plan? Obviously any training plan can and should be modified because everyone is different, but still. My goal is simply to finish.

Have you ever done a triathlon?  Any tips to training and gear I should definitely have???
