Running a Ragnar

by Heidi on July 27, 2012

I had running a relay race on my #30before30 list once. I think this will likely be in place of an international race – unless i can find a race in like…Toronto – someplace hubs and I can drive to…but that also requires me getting a new passport which I still have yet to do even though I’ve been married for almost three years…I just…don’t want to give up my Singapore and London and Amsterdam stamps! They’re the only ones I have!!

I digress. Sorry for the massive run on sentence. I saw the other day on the Annapolis Striders Facebook page that there was a comment about people looking for a couple more runners for a DC Ragnar team. I emailed. I waited. I got a response.

A $60 deposit later, and I’m in!

Initially, I tried to Ragnar Miami but it was going to be far too expensive than Hubs and I could handle. I try to keep my racing addiction on the cheap if you haven’t noticed. While I’d love to be “sponsored” to do a fun race, it hasn’t been in the cards for me…yet. I’m super excited to share my training and race experience with you all. If you’ve done a relay race and have any training tips or advice for race day(s) please share!!!

This puts my current race schedule for the end of the year at:

Aug 2 All Comers XC 5k
Aug 5 Dog Days 8k AACC
Aug 25 Keystone State Super Sprint Tri
Sept 21-22 Ragnar DC
Oct  21 Army 10 miler
Oct 28 Marine Corps 10k
Nov 11 JLA Volunteers on the Run 5k
Nov 18 Cold Turkey10k
Dec 9 Anniversary 15k

Time to strap my running shoes back on. This week has been an off week in regards to training but time to get back to it next week (and I’m looking forward to at least one nice long run this weekend up in Vermont!)

A couple of my friends did a Ragnar and LOVED it.  My suggestion would be to practice running in the dark, and figure out what you like best.  And carry extra batteries with you- one of them had the flashlight start to fade while she was alone in the dark on the side of the highway, and it was scary.

I’ve run in three Ragnar Relays – the one in TN twice (and registered for it again this November) and the Chicago one last year.  You will love it.  It’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had running!
