To Run or Not to Run

by Heidi on August 28, 2012

I’ve been struggling lately. Of course, now you know why but it’s more than that.

Last week, I noticed a lot of lower back pain – pain so sharp it would shoot into my legs and knees on a regular basis. I’ve learned to control it with Tylenol – about the only thing that pregnant ladies can take, but I don’t want to rely on medication to survive the next 6 and a half months. That and my heating pad that I got in Vermont recently (made from all natural products like rice and lavender that you just heat up for a minute!) are my best friends.

Apparently however, sciatica is apparently common during pregnancy – most common during the second or third trimester, however, possible at any time depending on the position of your uterus. #babyschmidtfail

“At various times throughout your pregnancy, your expanding uterus might put pressure on the sciatic nerve in the lower part of your spine, which causes lower back pain during pregnancy (which often travels throughout the body). When the baby starts to shift into the proper birth position in the third trimester, it can rest directly on the nerve, causing a major pain in the butt (and back, and legs).” {source}

That being said, my running has been at zero miles. Lie. Last week I ran 2.5 but walked half of it. No where near the 10-15 I should be running to train for the Army 10. Therein lies my dilemma.

Do I…try to train the best I can, and run it easy with lots of walk breaks. Or, do I try in the next three days to sell my bib, and just run it next year. Torn since I’ve wanted to run this race for the past FOUR years and have either been away, forgot to register, missed out on registration. This year though, I stayed up until MIDNIGHT and it’s going to be the first BIG race that Adam and I run together. Unofficially to celebrate his one year in the Army. I want to run it. I just don’t know if I can.

I know I can run it. Hell, I’ve read about pregnant women running MARATHONS. I’ll be about 16 weeks by that point and after that it’s going to be 5ks that I can run or walk if I feel like it (like the JLA Volunteers on the Run 5k).

Next week I have a doctors appointment, I’m definitely going to ask for their opinion – everything I’ve read encourages movement and exercise. And yoga. I really want to start going back to yoga since I *know* it’ll help, but I was afraid I wasn’t preggers enough to go to Prenatal yoga – i mean if everyone there is ready to pop and I’m just barely through my first trimester, I don’t want to be all like…hi, i just got knocked up like…yesterday how’s it going? (I know that’s bad and an exaggeration but still).

So on that note, despite my wishes to run the Army 10, maybe this isn’t the best idea, and I go cheer on the hubs, and to the blogger meetup and just be an awesome spectator if I can’t sell my bib by the 31st deadline. Does anyone at all want to buy my bib? $65, I’ll pay the transfer fee. Email ASAP!

    My general opinion on this is that now is really not the time to push yourself physically. If you’re already experiencing issues, maybe you should take it easy and try a less intense form of exercise. Obviously your doctor will give you the best advice on this, but you are pregnant and you should take care of yourself (and your baby) first!

    I think you’re right to be talking through it with your doctor before making any big decisions. It’s true that pregnant women run all kinds of events safely, but the reality is that you’ve got your whole life to do them so if it’s not deemed right for now there’s always the future!!
