A new month, a new race

by Heidi on May 4, 2009

I’ve made some monthly resolutions.

This month, I’m doing the 30 Day Shred five days/week for the entirety of hte month of May. Day 1? Didn’t kick my butt as much as I thought it would, probably my workout efforts over the past few weeks.

Also, marathon is in…twenty days (!!!). I missed my long run due to the rain…whoops. I need to run more. At least the runs I’ve been doing have been speed workouts. A few friends I know have told me those help as much, if not more than the long runs and since I’ve done two marathons, I know I can do it.

So I got home from work from the neverending shift at the gym and lo and behold, I see an amazing Blogger (who’s determination seriously amazes me…I love inspiring running bloggers) tweet about the NYC Half marathon. I had talked about running it before, so I figured well…why not?

So I go to the website, noticed that it was full. Registration just opened Friday and it’s already full.

So I checked out the charity list, and I’m going to run it for charity. It’ll be good practice, especially since I’m looking to raise money for Boston in 2010.

The charity I’m running it for? A Running Start.

It’s a 501(c)3 that raises money to help runners in East Africa. From their website:

…dedicated to using the power of sports to improve the lives of young East Africans. This region, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, is impoverished yet is home to the world’s greatest store of running talent. Our mission is to harness this talent in order to allow more East Africans to earn a U.S. university education from their athletic gift, to leverage sports to inspire local children to stay in school and to enable more talented young athletes to earn a living from the sport. Sport is an increasingly popular tool for youth development and social change in developing countries.”

I can not even begin to express my excitement! Seriously…way excited! I’ll likely be “soliciting” with a fundraising website linked from here eventually when I get all the details. Hopefully, also, I’ll be able to set up a happy hour somewhere in DC to raise money.

Would you ever run a race for charity???

I have never run FOR charity but I do choose my races based on where the money is going. This fall I will run my first race for charity; Philly PDR for the Back on my Feet program. BOMF is an orgnization that supports homeless people who are, as it states, back on their feet.
